Too often, I hear people say “I’m just a housewife” when they introduce themselves. I don’t understand why their introduction is always filled with regret and self-pity. Is it really a crime to be a housewife? Is it really embarrassing when you choose not to work outside and instead choose to work in your home?

How could you be “just a housewife” when the basic social unit of society depends on you and your service? A housewife works for the longest hour, supporting your husband, child’s studies, caring for elders, managing finances, pay8ing bills, grocery shopping, cooking according to individual taste, cleaning, etc. a housewife could be anyone: daughter, wife, mother, teacher, financial adviser, fashion designer and nurse, gardener, driver, cook, and so on. Don’t think you are not being paid for it. You get the reward that no money can offer—the love and affection of your family, their trust in you, a happy home and your own satisfaction.

It is you who choose to be in this occupation, willingly or for any other reason. After a busy day, all wait to return to the comfortable home set by you. They know you will be there to absorb all their stress and tiredness and relax them. Would the life have been the same if you had been working outside to earn some money? Would you along with your family have been able to buy all the content in life that you are enjoying now with that money?

Respect yourself for what you are. Introduce yourself to the world with the same dignity. The world understands the importance of your job. It’s time to make them accept it. Introduce yourself with pride and with twinkle in your eyes “I am a housewife” . Kick that “just” out.

24. People feel _____when they say “I’m just a housewife”.

   A. have the same life like before            B. lose the content that she is enjoying

   C. set a comfortable home for her family      D. absorb her family’s stress

27. What is the author’s attitude toward housewives?

   A. Supportive         B. Doubtful           C. Opposed        D. Disappointed
C

Researchers at University of California report that elderly women who sit for more than 10 hours a day with low physical activity have cells that are biologically older by eight years compared to women who are less sedentary.

The study, published online January 18 in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found elderly women with less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day and who remain seated for more than 10 hours per day have shorter telomeres(染色体终端), which protect chromosomes(染色体)from becoming bad and progressively shorten with age.

As a cell ages, its telomeres naturally shorten, but health and lifestyle factors, such as obesity and smoking, may quicken that process. Shortened telomeres are associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and major cancers.

“Our study found cells age faster with a sedentary lifestyle. Chronological(编年的)age doesn’t always match biological age,” said Shadyab, PhD, lead author of the study.

Shadyab and his research team believe they are the first to objectively measure how the combination of sedentary time and exercise can influence the aging biomarker.

Nearly 1,5000 women, ages 64 to 95, participated in the study. The participants completed questionnaires and wore an accelerometer on their right hip for seven consecutive days during waking and sleeping hours to track their movements.

“We found that women who sat longer did not have shorter telomere length if they exercised for at least 30 minutes a day, the national recommended guideline,” said Shadyab. “Discussions about the benefits of exercise should start when we are young, and physical activity should continue to be part of our daily lives as we get older, even at 80 years old.”

Shadyab said future studies will examine how exercise relates to telomere length in younger populations and in men.

28. The underlined word “sedentary” in the 1st paragraph most probably means________

A asleep B elderly  C seated  D active

29. The study mainly found recently that

   A. too much sitting but too little exercise may quicken biological aging

   B. telomeres progressively shorten with age

   C. physical activities stop women from aging

   D. shortened telomeres lead to major cancers

30. Which of the following true?

   A. Cells age faster with a less sedentary lifestyle

   B. Physical activity isn’t necessary for those at 80 years old

   C. The related studies will be carried out

   D. The finding is true of younger participants

31. Where do you most probably find this passage?

   A. In a fashion tabloid          B. In a text book

   C. In a science journal          D. In a beauty poster

A meeting between Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma and US President Donald Trump last Monday signals that Trump, whose tough attitude towards China has east dark clouds over China-US trade relations, left a door open for pragmatic(务实的)cooperation with Chinese companies, Chinese experts said.

The Chinese billionaire reportedly held a meeting with Trump in New York last Monday to discuss how the Chinese e-commerce giant could create jobs by allowing US businesses to sell products in the Chinese market.

Bai said the meeting also offers a pattern that other Chinese companies can follow in expanding to the US under Trump. “They have to stress how many jobs you can create in the US in talking with Trump,” he said.

32. Under President Trump, China-US relations may be _______.

   A. a little troublesome                B. more harmonious

   C. completely unchanged            D. extremely hopeless
